Terms of service

Acceptance

By accessing Tonic Research through your institution's licence, you agree to these terms and your institution's applicable policies. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

Your institution's master agreement with LaunchPad Labs takes precedence where it conflicts with these user-facing terms.

Eligibility

Access is limited to users with a valid university Microsoft account whose email domain is covered by an active institutional licence and available seat.

You must not share credentials or allow unauthorised users to access the service.

Permitted use

You may use the service only to:

• Translate academic papers and research documents you are authorised to submit.
• Review and export translations for legitimate scholarly or institutional purposes.
• Report translation quality issues through the in-app reporting feature.

Prohibited use

You must not:

• Upload unlawful, confidential third-party, or classified material without proper authority.
• Attempt to reverse engineer, scrape, or overload the service.
• Use automated tools to exceed licence limits or circumvent access controls.
• Present machine translations as human-certified translations without appropriate review and disclosure.

Your content

You retain ownership of documents you upload. You grant LaunchPad Labs a limited licence to process, store, and display content solely to provide the Tonic Research service.

You represent that you have the right to upload content and that doing so does not infringe third-party rights.

Translation quality

Translations are generated automatically to assist academic work. They are not a substitute for human scholarly review, copy-editing, or official certification.

You are responsible for verifying accuracy, citations, terminology, and suitability before publication or submission.

Availability and changes

We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. Maintenance, updates, or third-party outages may occur.

We may modify features or these terms with reasonable notice where practicable.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, LaunchPad Labs is not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from use of translations or service interruption.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or other liability that cannot be excluded by law.

Suspension and termination

You may delete your account at any time from Account. Deletion permanently removes your papers, translations, files, and account, and cannot be reversed.

We or your institution may suspend access for breach of these terms, licence expiry, or security reasons.

On termination, access ends and data handling follows your institution's agreement and our privacy policy.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, subject to mandatory consumer protections where applicable.
